In 1962 an American family, Jack and Gladys Martin, traveled to Thailand under the auspices of the Foriegn Mission Board with the purpose of working and helping Thai people in the areas of education and developing life morals. They studies the Thai language and the culture of Thai people, hoping to be benefit in doing their work activities in Thailand Then they began working to support and facilitate education by assuming responsibility at the Baptist Student Center on Phayathai Road, which at the time was a center for teaching English to Thai people.
In 1971 Rev.Jack Martin began his first work in prisons when he received permission to enter and offer life morals trainning to prisoners.
In 1976, Rev.Jack Martin received permission to expand his work into another two or three prisons-in particular, to work with international prisoners in the Khlong Prem and Bang Kwang Center Prisons. Besides that, his wife Glad Martin stated teaching and helping women prisoners in the Center Women's Prison as well.
During the years 1976-1978, the Christian Prison Ministry conducted activities of traning and developing life morals for inmates with the help of many volunteers from several organizations who came in to help and worked as a team.
Then in 1981 Rev.Soonthorn Soonthorntarawong began taking part and a volunteer having responsibility for traning and facilitating the life debelopment of Thai prisons in two or three prisons.
This was when he had just completed his studies at the Baptist Seminary. After Rev.Soonthorn had been helping the work of the Christian Prison Ministry for a while, he began thinking of administering and setting up a system for working more efficiently to help prisons. He began putting together projects and various activities in prisons as examples of what would be of benefit in training and developing the lives of prisoners.
In 1983 Rev. Soonthorn assumed more responsibility in the work of the Christian Prison Ministry by setting up a ministry team and a system for conducting work, and coordinating with the Corrections Department and the different prisons.
This enabled the work of the Christian Prison Ministry to expand further. From prisons in Bangkok, there began to be training programs in the prisons of other provinces. With many volunteers from different places coming together as a team to help the work become fruitful, the work expanded into all four regions of Thailand. We must thank the Lord for all the colunteers who played a great part in moving the work of the prison ministry forward. I believe that every one of you who have a part in helping this woek has surely received a reward from the Lord according to your work.
From the past to the present, for 37 years the Christian Prison Ministry has assumed responsibility for helping these many disadvantaged people. The organization has matured and developed and even greater burden for this work. Having a ministry team that works together showing genuine goodwill and sacriffice for their fellow man, and a Board of Directors that works togerhter in the Christian Prison Ministry, the two jointly agreed on registering the Christian Prison Ministry Foundation. The purposes of the foundation are as follows:
1. Establishing teams of instructors to train and develop the quality of life those in prisoners an djuvenile centers.
